Job Title: Hospital Cleaner

Job Description

The Housekeeper plays a vital role in maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment throughout a large hospital facility. You will clean and sanitize a wide variety of areas, including patient rooms, emergency and operating rooms, waiting areas, staff lounges, labs, radiology rooms, and other common spaces. This role requires consistent attention to detail, strong customer service, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced healthcare setting while frequently lifting up to 35 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Clean and sanitize patient rooms after discharge, including changing linens, disinfecting surfaces, and preparing the room for the next patient.

  • Perform cleaning duties in emergency rooms (ER), operating rooms (OR), waiting areas, staff lounges, labs, radiology rooms, and other hospital common areas.

  • Handle all aspects of cleaning such as sweeping, mopping, dusting, trash removal, and general floor care.

  • Replenish linens and other supplies in designated areas to ensure rooms and departments are fully stocked.

  • Safely lift and move items up to 35 pounds as part of daily cleaning tasks.

  • Follow hospital and departmental cleaning protocols, including proper handling and disposal of waste and materials.

  • Maintain a high standard of cleanliness and presentation in all assigned areas.

  • Interact professionally and courteously with doctors, nurses, hospital staff, patients, family members, and visitors.

  • Work with a sense of urgency while maintaining accuracy and thoroughness in all cleaning tasks.

  • Adhere to safety and infection control procedures, including working around bodily fluids and a wide range of patient conditions.

  • Communicate any maintenance or safety issues observed in work areas to the appropriate personnel.

  • Manage time effectively to complete assigned cleaning routes and tasks within the scheduled shift.

Essential Skills

  • Previous commercial cleaning or housekeeping experience in environments such as hospitals, hotels, nursing homes, schools, or similar settings is strongly preferred.

  • Strong customer service skills and the ability to interact professionally with hospital staff, patients, and visitors.

  • Self-motivation with the ability to work independently and stay on task.

  • High attention to detail to ensure all areas are thoroughly cleaned and sanitized.

  • Ability to work with a sense of urgency in a fast-paced environment.

  • Comfort working in a hospital setting and encountering a wide range of emotions, people, and bodily fluids.

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 35 pounds on a daily basis.

  • Clear and respectful communication skills with a variety of hospital personnel and the public.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in hospital housekeeping or healthcare environmental services is a plus.

  • Experience in other commercial cleaning environments such as hotels, nursing homes, or school systems is beneficial.

  • Ability to learn new procedures and protocols quickly.

  • Professional demeanor and strong sense of personal presentation.

  • Reliability and flexibility to support weekend and holiday schedules as needed.

Work Environment

This role is based in a large, busy health system with a substantial housekeeping and support staff team. The position is available on 1st shift or Mid shift, working from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m OR 10:30am - 7:00pm., Monday through Friday, with every other weekend required. When you work a weekend, you receive scheduled days off during the week, typically a Monday or Tuesday and a Thursday or Friday. You must be open to working weekends and holidays . The environment includes patient care areas, clinical departments, and common spaces where you may encounter a wide range of people, emotions, and medical situations. Uniforms are provided, and you are required to wear non-slip shoes. Presentation standards include maintaining professional hair color, keeping nails no longer than 1/4 inch, and avoiding visible tattoos on the face, neck, and hands. The workplace emphasizes safety, cleanliness, and a professional appearance at all times.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Charlottesville, VA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $15.00 - $15.00/hr.
