Job Title: Sheet Metal Technician

Job Description

This role focuses on installing and assembling sheet metal ductwork for a large commercial healthcare project. You will perform precise hanger, high-pressure, and low-pressure duct installations while following safety standards and construction specifications. The position requires strong field experience, the ability to read and interpret drawings, and a commitment to working safely and efficiently on an active construction site.

Responsibilities

  • Install hangers for duct systems, including hanging sheet metal strap from pre-installed inserts in concrete decks and installing trapeze strut hangers.

  • Install high-pressure duct systems using TDF/TDC flange rectangular duct connections, ensuring proper alignment, sealing, and support.

  • Cut in taps on high-pressure duct as needed, following project specifications and best practices.

  • Install low-pressure duct systems, including cutting and installing spiral ductwork and associated fittings.

  • Read and interpret construction drawings and blueprints to plan and execute duct installation work accurately.

  • Use scissor lifts and other equipment safely to access elevated work areas as required for duct and hanger installation.

  • Operate and maintain personal hand tools such as impact drills, wrenches, pliers, channel locks, vice grips, sockets, and screwdrivers.

  • Follow all site safety procedures, including proper use of PPE such as type 2 hard hats with chin straps, cut level 5 gloves, safety glasses, and steel-toed boots.

  • Collaborate with other trades and site personnel to coordinate work, maintain productivity, and meet project deadlines.

  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, ensuring materials and tools are stored safely and efficiently.

  • Document work performed as required and communicate progress or issues to site supervision in a timely manner.

Essential Skills

  • At least 5 years of experience installing ductwork in commercial or industrial environments.

  • Proficiency in installing sheet metal duct, including both high-pressure and low-pressure systems.

  • Experience with TDF/TDC flange rectangular duct connections and spiral ductwork installation.

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and construction drawings related to HVAC and duct systems.

  • OSHA 10 certification or higher, or the ability to obtain it before starting.

  • Valid scissor lift certification, or the ability to obtain it before starting.

  • Ownership and competent use of hand tools including impact drill, wrenches, pliers, channel locks, vice grips, 9/16" sockets with impact adapter, and screwdrivers.

  • Ability to work safely at heights using lifts and appropriate fall protection when required.

  • Type 2 hard hat with chin strap, or the ability to obtain it before starting.

  • Cut level 5 gloves, or the ability to obtain them before starting.

  • Strong understanding of construction site safety practices and PPE requirements.

  • Reliable attendance and ability to work the scheduled hours consistently.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Journeyman card in sheet metal or a related trade is a plus.

  • OSHA 30 certification is highly desirable.

  • Experience in commercial construction, industrial construction, or large healthcare projects.

  • Experience with harness and retractable fall protection systems.

  • Experience in stainless steel welding or general welding is a plus.

  • Previous experience on long-term construction projects.

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a field team.

Work Environment

You will work on a large hospital construction project with a schedule typically running Monday through Thursday from 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and Friday from 6:00 a.m. to noon, with potential Saturday work added in late spring and early summer as needed. The environment is an active commercial construction site with other trades present, requiring consistent adherence to safety protocols. You will frequently work at heights using scissor lifts and will handle sheet metal duct, hangers, and related materials and tools throughout the day. Required personal protective equipment includes a type 2 hard hat with chin strap, cut level 5 gloves, high-visibility apparel, harness and retractable fall protection when needed, steel-toed boots, and safety glasses. The role is hands-on and physically active, involving standing, lifting, and working in various positions for extended periods in a dynamic construction setting.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $35.00/hr.
