About the Job
The Transportation Manager is responsible for leading daily transportation operations with a strong focus on frontline engagement, driver performance, and operational efficiency. This role oversees the onboarding, development, coaching, mentoring, and performance management of approximately 20–25 drivers and helpers, while fostering positive, productive relationships across the frontline workforce. The manager spends the majority of time in the field, actively supporting employees and ensuring safe, compliant, and efficient operations.
This position manages either the Roll-Off or Commercial line of business within a high-volume operation that supports one of the largest hauling sites in the Capital Market Area, executing approximately 72 routes daily across Commercial, Roll-Off, and Residential services. Responsibilities include overseeing route execution, ensuring service reliability, and driving continuous improvement in safety, productivity, and customer satisfaction.
The role operates on a Monday–Friday schedule with periodic Saturday coverage (approximately one month rotation), with start times as early as 1:30 AM to support early route dispatch and operational readiness. The Transportation Manager plays a critical role in maintaining performance, optimizing route efficiency, and ensuring adherence to company policies and regulatory requirements, while building a culture of accountability, engagement, and excellence.
What You'll be Doing
Ensuring new frontline employees have tools, instruction, and feedback for successful daily duties
Meet with new frontline employees daily to ensure consistent communication and support of onboarding
Provide timely and consistent touchpoints with frontline employees.
Regular review of best practices to enhance daily performance
Focus on understanding and progress of frontline employee career goals
Identify and address improvement opportunities and collaborate with frontline employees to ensure continued success
Actively practice and seek feedback on coaching conversations.
Lead by example to ensure safety practices are paramount with each employee and
Teaching and developing an understanding of the WM Way
Conducts Root Cause Investigations for all injuries and incidents, ensuring consistent discipline and retraining.
Documents and maintains records required by regulatory agencies such as the Department of Transportation.
Reviews and audits documentation related to route operations daily (e.g., DVIRs, driver time and attendance, open tickets), following up where appropriate.
Visits customers and customer sites to evaluate and resolve safety issues, seeking service alternatives where appropriate.
What does it take to be a Transportation Manager with WM?
A. Required Qualifications
Associate's Degree (accredited) or in lieu of a degree,
High School Diploma (accredited) and two (2) years of relevant work experience.
Must be at least 18 years of age
Legally eligible to work in the country where the position is located
Valid Driver's License
B. Preferred Qualifications
- Successful completion of the WM Operations Manager Trainee program
