Job Title: Heavy Equipment Operator – Site Work / Civil Construction
Job Description
This role operates heavy equipment on large civil construction and site development projects across the southern Massachusetts and South Shore area. The position focuses on utility and site work, with a preference for candidates experienced in water and sewer projects. You will review plans, lead a crew of operators and laborers, and ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and to specification.
Responsibilities
Operate heavy equipment such as excavators, dozers, backhoes, forklifts, and grinding equipment on civil construction and site development projects.
Review construction plans and blueprints to understand project scope, site conditions, and required specifications.
Lead and coordinate a crew of operators and laborers to successfully complete assigned projects on schedule.
Perform site work activities including excavation, grading, trenching, and backfilling for utility and site development projects.
Support installation and maintenance of water and sewer utilities as part of utility construction work.
Ensure safe operation of all equipment and adherence to OSHA and company safety standards on site.
Inspect equipment before and after use, report any defects, and support basic maintenance to keep equipment in safe working condition.
Maintain clear communication with supervisors, crew members, and other stakeholders to ensure efficient workflow and problem resolution.
Monitor site conditions and adjust equipment operation as needed to maintain quality and productivity.
Contribute to a clean, organized job site and support overall project quality and compliance with plans and specifications.
Essential Skills
At least 5 years of experience working in the site development field.
Proven experience operating heavy equipment such as excavators, dozers, backhoes, forklifts, and grinding equipment in a civil construction environment.
Ability to read and interpret construction plans and blueprints.
Strong experience in civil construction and site work, including excavation and grading.
Experience working on utility construction projects, preferably with water and sewer systems.
Current OSHA 10 certification.
Demonstrated ability to lead and work with a crew of operators and laborers to complete projects successfully.
Solid understanding of safety practices and regulations on construction sites.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience in utility construction and site development on large-scale projects.
Familiarity with surface grinding and related site preparation techniques.
Ability to adapt to changing site conditions and prioritize tasks effectively.
Strong communication skills to coordinate with team members and supervisors.
Commitment to maintaining equipment in good working order and following safety procedures.

Work Environment
The role is based in the southern Massachusetts and South Shore area, working primarily on utility construction and site development projects. You will work outdoors on active construction sites, operating heavy equipment such as excavators, dozers, backhoes, forklifts, and grinding machinery. The environment involves typical construction site conditions, including varying weather, uneven terrain, and active utility and earthwork operations. Work hours align with standard construction schedules, with potential for extended hours depending on project needs. Field-appropriate work attire and personal protective equipment are required to maintain safety on site.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Canton, MA.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $48.00/hr.
